Bill Crothers Secondary School

Picture 016RBill Crothers Secondary School in York Region promotes active and healthy living among its students. It is the second full sports academy in Canada and has programs relating to sports management, promotions, coaching and health sciences as well as an eco-school sustainability awareness curriculum.

Being that the school was constructed on ecologically sensitive land the design includes some of the larger sustainable practices that the Town of Markham was promoting for development in their downtown.  The board and Town worked together to not only create an amazing space for students but for the community to enjoy with enhanced walking trails along the Rouge River.

The LID practices implemented on site are biofilters, vegetated swales, and rainwater harvesting which provides water for irrigation of the sports fields. There are no conventional catchbasins or stormsewers anywhere on the site therefore stormwater management relies completely on the LID techniques.
