Performance Assessment of a Pond-Wetland Stormwater Management Facility

The facility known as the Markham Best Management Practice Demostration Project was designed to perform several functions, including stormwater treatment, base-flow augmentation, flood protection and downstream erosion control.  The sediment forebay, wet pond and wetland treat stormwater runoff from a 600 hectare predominantly residential drainage area.

The facility met or exceeded most of the original design targets and objectives, demonstrating that significant improvement in performance can be achieved by retrofitting small single-subdivision catchment water quantity stormwater ponds to much larger and more cost-effective centralized pond-wetland treatment systems as development with the catchment increases.
