Course Description

This course has been developed to introduce participants to the concepts of Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC). Comprised of eight modules this course discusses the potential impacts of construction activities, ESC fundamentals, erosion control practices, sediment control practices, in-water and near water works, pollution prevention, winter preparedness and legislation.

Who Should Attend?

This course is intended for contractors, developers, consultants, municipal staff, landowners or anyone looking to gain a general knowledge of erosion and sediment control concepts and best management practices.

Learning Objectives:

1. Discuss how construction activities have the potential to impact various types of environments
2. Define the concepts of erosion and sedimentation and the factors that influence them
3. Understand the fundamental difference between erosion control versus sediment control
4. Identify different types of erosion and sediment control management practices and their appropriate application
5. List the basic principles of erosion and sediment control
6. Discuss the different methods and techniques associated with working in and around water
7. Identify the types and sources of pollution and hazardous materials on a work site and understand strategies for managing these hazards
8. Discuss the importance of winter preparedness and the strategies for effective winter ESC
9. Understand the Federal and Provincial Legislation related to construction activities and the importance of due diligence
