Course Description

This webinar will help to bridge the gap between existing design guidance and the latest research on low impact development (LID) technologies.  Current LID Guidelines (e.g. TRCA Stormwater Wiki) recommend underdrains be installed whenever you are designing infiltration measures in soils with low infiltration capacity, such as silty-clays and clays. When underdrains are connected to municipal stormwater infrastructure, this could mean very little detention of runoff during extreme weather events, resulting in engineers unable to meet water balance (runoff volume control) targets. This webinar will discuss the latest research on enhancing infiltration and evapotranspiration in LID practices as well as present potential opportunities for extending stormwater detention in infiltration practices, without increasing flood risk.  Research discussed is specific to the local southern Ontario area and cold climates.  Lastly, the learnings from research will be discussed in relation to stormwater management guidelines. How can research and guidelines be integrated so that we can achieve the best stormwater solutions?
