Etobicoke Stormwater Management Facility – Toronto, Ontario
An innovative stormwater management facility, which incorporates both a wetland and a flow balancing system, has been constructed by the City of Toronto on the shores of Lake Ontario in the Humber Bay. This facility consists of a wetland and four cells which are separated by PVC curtains suspended from floating pontoons. The wetland is the final treatment area through which water flows prior to release into Lake Ontario. The primary mechanism of contaminant removal in the system is gravitational settling. In addition to improving the water quality of outflows to Lake Ontario, this facility may provide a healthy habitat for aquatic organisms and wildlife, as well as aesthetic and recreational benefits for area residents.
