Practical Guidance on Inspecting and Maintaining Low Impact Development/Green Stormwater Infrastructure

October 30, 2018 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
CCIW Office, 867 Lakeshore Rd, Burlington
Instructors: Kyle Vander Linden and Dean Young

Produced through Canada’s Climate Change Adaptation Platform, with support from Natural Resources Canada.

Course description

Municipalities already face significant challenges in tracking, inspecting and maintaining their own conventional stormwater infrastructure while ensuring practices on private property are also adequately maintained. Integrating green stormwater infrastructure like low impact development (LID) best management practices (BMPs), into municipal asset management programs presents additional challenges, but ways to overcome them do exist. Participants will learn about essential steps in program design, inspection and testing protocols, and the specific needs for three common types of LID BMPs: permeable pavement; bioretention; and underground infiltration systems. The experienced instructors will also impart valuable lessons learned from Ontario case studies and life cycle cost comparisons for each type of LID BMP.

Who should attend?

This course is intended for developers, consultants, municipal and conservation authority staff, contractors, students, property owners and anyone else looking to gain a strong working knowledge of the inspection, operation and maintenance needs of LID/green stormwater infrastructure.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify components of stormwater infrastructure asset management programs that are critical for developing the capacity to manage LID BMPs
2. Identify program and LID BMP design features needed to make inspection and maintenance easy to perform
3. Summarize the recommended framework of inspections, indicators and tests to use during the main lifecycle stages of each type of LID BMP
4. Recognize key components of LID BMPs that require inspection and maintenance and equipment needs
5. Estimate the inspection and maintenance costs of LID BMPs over their operating lifespan using available guidance and life cycle costing tool

Additional Information:

Lunch and refreshments will be provided
