Webinar – Making LID Inspection and Maintenance (I&M) Cheaper and Easier By Design (Previously Recorded)

Online anytime!
Estimated time requirement: 1 hour
Instructor: Dean Young

Course Description

Integrating Low Impact Development (LID) approaches to stormwater management into new and existing urban areas can increase the resiliency of our communities and receiving waters to the extreme weather patterns that are anticipated in a changing climate. But operationalizing an LID approach requires municipalities and property managers to develop their capacity to inspect and maintain best management practices (BMPs) that most have little or no experience with. The long-term performance of LID BMPs is contingent upon proper inspection and maintenance. Designing LID BMPs with ease of inspection and maintenance in mind is critical to the affordability of stormwater asset management programs and must be considered during design and approval processes. Design practitioners with a thorough understanding of LID inspection and maintenance processes and requirements can create more practical and effective designs that are easier and cheaper to operate. This webinar provides an overview of the types of inspection and maintenance activities that need to be carried out on LID BMPs and identifies design considerations that can have a significant impact on long term operation needs and costs including inlet design, pre-treatment devices, monitoring wells, access routes and ports, planting plan design, plant selection, seasonal considerations and predictive approaches to optimizing routine work. Additional recommendations are presented to help practitioners streamline inspection and maintenance activities, optimize routine work and minimize program costs.

Who Should Attend?

This webinar is intended for anyone who is involved in the design and/or review of LID practices or developing stormwater infrastructure asset management programs, responsible for carrying out inspection and maintenance of LID, interested in learning how to simplify and lower costs related to LID mainenance or simply interested in learning more about LID.

Learning Objectives:

1. Summarize the recommended framework of inspection types, indicators and tests to use during the main life cycle stages of each type of LID BMP.
2. Identify components of LID BMPs to inspect and their maintenance needs,
3. Recognize BMP features that are critical for inspection and make routine maintenance tasks easier and cheaper to perform.
4. Understand ways to optimize green stormwater infrastructure asset management programs to minimize level of effort and costs;
5. Discover available tools for estimating life cycle costs of LID BMPs.
