Course description

The Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network is a multi-sector biomonitoring collaboration, in which bottom-dwelling aquatic invertebrates are used to monitor the ecological condition of lakes, streams, and wetlands. The Network is led by the Ontario Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, but certified participants represent all sectors. The network features standard sampling protocols, training, and a database (which allows data to be shared among members). In association with the Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol (OSAP) training course, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) are offering a benthic macroinvertebrate identification workshop.

Who should attend?

This training is recommended for anyone interested in using benthic macroinvertebrates to monitor streams using OMOECC recognized provincially standardized protocols.

Learning Objectives:

The course includes a 2 day focus on identification and taxonomy and a 3rd day field practicum that covers stream sampling techniques following the Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network Protocol (OBBN). Participants demonstrating proficiency will be certified as OBBN members.

Instruction at this workshop will focus on the 27-group taxonomy, the minimum standard for the Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol (OSAP) and the Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network (OBBN). This level of instruction is suited to those inexperienced with invertebrate identification.
