The CISEC program, including CAN-CISEC is the leading certification program for erosion and sediment control inspectors in Canada and the U.S.  The CAN-CISEC program is a partnership between Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and CISEC, Inc., out of Parker, Colorado.

Course description

Participants completing the certification program will demonstrate the following:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of controlling sediment and erosion and other storm water pollutants;
  • Necessary skills to observe onsite and offsite conditions that impact the quality of storm water discharges from active construction sites;
  • Ability to inspect installed best management practices and their ongoing maintenance needs to determine if mitigation measures will sufficiently minimize the discharge of sediment and other pollutants from active construction sites;
  • Ability to communicate and report on the inspection of active construction sites to determine if storm water management compliance issues exist; and
  • Understanding of Federal, Provincial and local rules and regulations that apply to construction site erosion and sediment control practices.
CAN-CISEC training course

The CAN-CISEC training course is a 1.5 day course covering the following topics:

  • Understanding potential impacts of construction activities
  • Background information for inspectors including roles and responsibilities
  • Erosion control best management practices
  • Sediment control best management practices
  • Regulations and compliance
  • Conducting construction site inspections
Who should attend?

The CAN-CISEC training course is open to all interested professionals regardless of whether or not they are intending to write the certification exam. The training course is intended to be a review for participants taking the Level 3 exam; however, those individuals who are new to the industry will find that the course offers valuable knowledge and presents clear guidance with respect to the development of inspection skills and abilities.

CAN-CISEC certification options

Track One (intended for participants who are new to the industry and who have less than 2 year’s work experience):

  1. Attend CISEC Training Course
  2. Write Level 1 Exam
  3. Accumulate 2 years work experience
  4. Apply* and Write Level 2 Exam
  5. Upon passing Level 2, participant is fully certified
  6. Pay annual membership dues and earn 12 continuing development hours (CDH) per year to maintain certification status**

Track Two (intended for participants who have been working in the industry for a minimum of two years or greater):

  1. Attend CISEC Training Course (optional, but recommended)
  2. Apply* and write Level 3 exam
  3. Upon passing Level 3, participant is fully certified
  4. Pay annual membership dues and earn 12 continuing development hours (CDH) per year to maintain certification status**

*Participants must complete an application form demonstrating they have a minimum of two year’s work experience, have completed applicable training/professional development in the past four years and arrange for three letters of reference. Application forms are due three weeks prior to the exam date. All applications are reviewed by CISEC Inc.
**Annual membership dues and proof of CDH are due on September 30th each year.
