Course description

Green infrastructure (GI) and low impact development (LID) are predicated on meeting “new” design metrics, such as annual runoff matching, stream stability, and carbon sequestration. Many (generally smaller-scale) practices are used to comply with design metrics, including bioretention, permeable pavement, swales, bio-swales, regenerative stormwater conveyance, rainwater harvesting, and green roofs. Each of these practices has unique design features, some of which are intended to ensure longer-term operation.  Maintenance needs must be well understood before practices are selected.

This workshop will focus on design with a peek into the maintenance of stormwater control measures (SCM) used to comply with new developmental goals.

Learning Objectives

Attendees of this class will be able to:

  1. Designers will understand different means of evaluating LID, SCM design successes. These include traditional (hydrology and water quality) and non-traditional (Carbon, Property Value) metrics.
  2. Core design standards for the following practices (bioretention, permeable pavement, swales, regenerative stormwater conveyance, rainwater harvesting, and green roofs) will be explained as underpinned by relevant research.
  3. Maintenance (and maintenance-based design) will be addressed for the two most prevalent LID stormwater control measures, bioretention and permeable pavements.
